Why would they? If you do anything related to combustion engines in Germany, the government will bail you out no matter how badly you fuck up. It would be fiscally irresponsible to spend your own money on that
I do not know the details of this story but they have indicated that they can not be competitive with Chinese imports based on current safety and human standards and costs (for electric trucks). Unions and good working conditions are expensive. Western manufacturers have an advantage in combustion engine and drivetrain expertise.
I doubt they want to destroy the world. They certainly want to continue running a profit. Competition lowers profits. But being really incompetitive means losing the market. Losing thr market means no trucks built by our human standards.
We should require imports to at least have been built on the same standards as hold in our market. We should speed up ecological efforts and demand good worker conditions, safety standards and ecological standards from every product that reaches our market.

The charging network is only going to be built out if there are going to be users of it. Companies are not going to go build chargers comparable to the current fossil fuel network to have them sit idle. And anyone who is willing to take risk on that front is going to expect that mandates on EVs don’t get pushed back, or they lose money on their buildout.
