      My first thought exactly. There’s a lot to like about the EU, but protection of citizen privacy isn’t one of them.

    It’s not obvious that associate EU membership would provide enough benefits to Canada (it does include getting EU grants and free exchange of high tech workers) but it is likely to include payments to EU (that may be higher than benefits) and accepting weird EU laws. All the states in EU have ties to US military/intelligence/“Antlanticist politics” that allow any one state to provide a spying favour to US through their encryption backdoors.
