These days, it seems that I am feeling love again and getting more nuanced on love. I just wondered if people here once had a life outside screen and fall in love with someone. When you met your first love for the first time in your life, how did you meet them? Were you classmates, co-workers, neighbours, or what? I was in 7th grade when I can say that I felt that for my female classmates. I could not tell them cuz they were already interested in another guy. I was a very weird person so they were more annoyed with me but never knew what I felt for them. Although they forgave me and we remained classmates and they are doing fine (one is posting about her university life on Insta, another one is anonymous), but yeah this experience just makes me realize that how much time has passed.
I was ostracised, hated, and bullied by the entire school. Except this one person was kind to me, and I liked them back. We would read together in the library and talk about random stuff and just hang out. It was the kind of relationship where you both like each other and know the other likes you but somehow neither of you makes a move.
But I was also a kid, and completely clumsily fucked it up. One day I said something so horrible, I still regret it to this day. Honestly one of the biggest regrets of my life. They avoided me, and never spoke to me again. I didn’t even apologise, because I was a coward and a jerk. I still liked them after that, but it hurt too much, so I avoided them too. Learning experience for sure.
Well you are not your past anymore so live without regrets.
It doesn’t specify romantic love, so the first time I met my first love I was at a Red Robin’s and she had just turned three, I had been dating her dad about six months. She is still very much the sunshine of my life, because of her I know what love is, I know what it’s like to love someone with my whole heart, to love someone not just enough to die for them but to live for them too. She’s the first person I’ve ever truly, deeply, loved and my life is so much better with her in it. Having biological kids wasn’t in my cards because I have cystic fibrosis so having her in my life is truly wonderful, she was also the deciding factor for getting my lung transplant, I chose to gamble it all for more time with her, and it paid off in spades
I have yet to experience this level of love in my life.
Dating app. Months of bad dates, a few spurts of nothing, and then poof he’s here out of nowhere. 🥰 That’s how adults in our 30s date though. We’re looking for someone who can fit into our already established lives.
seems very 2020s
She stalked me on Facebook because I dressed like the Crow and acted like a quirk chungus. It was a different time.
what is quirk chungus?
A horrible mistake. Let it be purged from the earth forever.
Nah mate. That mistake made you who you are.
Great movie.
As the man said, “I helped her out of a jam I guess.” Now I wouldn’t exactly say that I “used a little too much force”, but I sure did over-achieve on the whole helping a stranger out thing.
Anyway, we’ve been married for five years now.
from traffic jam?
I was best friends with his sister. I met him when I was in middle school but I didn’t fall for him until high school. I was staying the night at my best friends house and she went to sleep early. He stayed up with me and we talked all night.
It would still be 3 years before we dated. He was in a toxic relationship with a girl who threatened to kill herself every time he wanted to leave. He never cheated though. He finally left her and his sister and I were no longer very close.
We just happened to run into each other when we were both at a retail store. He gave me his new number. I text him shortly after. He came over and we started dating that night. We were together about 2 years. We were young and both had a lot of growing to do.
I used to keep in contact with him but, his wife got pissed. I told him that’s fine, if he was unwilling to stand up for himself again (his wife is similar to his ex) that that was his choice. I wasn’t going to step on his marriage.
Still occasionally talk to his sister but, haven’t talked to him in 10+ years.
Bro really had some bad luck but yeah it feels so awesome that people used to go outside. Now everything is mostly online.
I met all of my loves in the same bar in the 90s. Sometimes the love was short lived, sometimes a little longer and one is still with me for 30 years next january.
Where everybody knows you name…
Not that small, more like a small club.
First one I met when I was a member of the Society for Creative Anachronisms. Second one was while I was a piercing apprentice. Third, fourth, fifth, and sixth (the one that I’m married to now) I initially met online. My first ex-wife was between #2 and #3.
you seem to me very experienced in love, lol.
im still not sure I believe in love and emotions as some sort of mystical type thing. So like young ages like that I would just say im attracted to someone not necessarily in love. I met my wife who I am closely bonded to at a fan convention.
Everyone experiences love differently
yes. this is why I put I and believe and such in my answer. To make it clear im not speaking in broad terms about what everyone should be like.
how long ago?
since we met? since we married? since we bonded? bonding is sorta an ongoing things so right off the bat I can’t give a date for that.
when you met?
26 years
Life outside the computer? Well, I fail that one. But to answer the question very short and sweet.
Met online. Q-Link, 1986. Been together since.
what was Q-Link?
Quantum Link, a Commodore64-specific BBS/discussion boards system that had access phone numbers across the US (yes, it was dialup, 300 and 1200 baud blazing speeds). Some of its infrastructure was later bought to create America Online (AOL).
gonna look into it and ancient chat mechanisms later.
Multiple points of contact. Our parents were friends. Our older brothers were friends. We went to the same school but were in different classes. We had some hobbies in common. I don’t recall when we first met, we were probably 4-7 years old and certainly no unique relationship feelings until many years after that.
are you still together?
Nope
The first time I fell for someone in earnest I was 14-15, and it was for my first ex, a very nice, mature and intelligent lady called Paula (she was a year older than me, so comparatively she was very mature, ig). We were studying French in a language institute after school (I suck at sports, lol, I had to do something!) and we just “vibed”. Being a more reckless and hornier younger me, things naturally evolved from friendship to relationship. I was just a bigger mess at the time, more needlessly combative and less emotionally stable, so a year or so in she decided to call it quits. I’m not on social media so I didn’t “follow” her, but I hope she’s doing well. 🫶
That is how teens are I guess. As someone who is going to turn 19, I really feel bad sometimes that I did not enjoy my early teens but yeah sometimes, a wrong train can take you to the right station and I forgive myself for that. Glad that you took a chance.
I’ve met all my partners offline. Friends of friends usually, and concerts, the park or the pub.
First love I met in a park - they were hanging with their friends nearby my friends and the groups started mixing. Stayed out way too long just to keep talking.
how long ago?
First was over 20 years ago, last less than five years ago.
She taught me how to cross my eyes while we sat on the floor in a circle next to each other.
how long ago? and did you learn?
Would have been … 1975. And yes, I did.
She was my friend’s cousin, we met my freshman year in high school and just hit it off right away.
Dated until junior year and broke up, which in high school felt like an eternity.
It was an immature sort of love between two very young people who were both years away from even beginning to figure out who they really were. We grew in completely different directions and our inexperience made us both pretty bad partners at times. But it was still love nonetheless, and the first time I had experienced it.
lemme guess, 2010s?
Late 2000s but close!
