Here is my idea
Once a team is eliminated from getting the 6 seed or better. A tally starts, every quarter they win in the remaining games, they get one point, maybe give 2 or 3 points for a win.
At the end of the season, the team with the most points, gets highest odds to win the lottery.
Still helps bad teams because they will be eliminated early and have more chances to get points. At the same time, it gives them motivation to play better at the end of the season.
The point amount only matters for eventual non playoff teams. So a team may end up with some points but they make the playoffs… Those teams are not considered in lottery.
I’m just imagining a team getting an injury and tanking hard to be eliminated as quickly as possible, then bringing back their star, getting the best odds, and having to decide whether to try and make the playoffs or tank the Play-In for a guaranteed Top 5 Pick.
I’m sorry, I know you’re trying, but this idea is terrible. The lottery system is fine, tanking is not actually a problem.
The ELAM format didn’t “save” the All Star Game, so I’m inclined to believe that tinkering with the draft lottery will not “save” or improve the draft lottery either.
Just scrap the lottery and do the draft wheel. Disconnect team performance from the onboarding of new talent in the league.
With no incentive to tank, a lot of the leagues problems will fix themselves.
Even better: make rookies join as free agents so franchises have an incentive to be lucrativ to young talent.
Nah, won’t really help. Might even make middling/poor teams start to tank earlier. They can get eliminated quickly and then be better than the tanking teams when it comes to winning quarters.
Three lottery system itself is not broken. The NBA regular season is broken.
Last 20 games of the season for a lot of teams are a joke
Players will still be drafted to randomized places and leave them as soon as they have the leverage.
Nah.
