For most of these NBA players making tens of millions of dollars, why would they care about a measly $500k, as to them it is nothing. And guaranteeing a playoff spot for the winner might be a little extreme, so what should the prize be? More money?

The median (not mean because some players make bank) NBA salary is 4.3 million, that’s before taxes. Half the league makes 4.3 mil or less. 500k is a lot of money. Even if you make 10 mil, 500k is a lot of money. It’s like a 5% bonus. Every superstar has a cool teammate whose making alot less, bench boys deserve to get paid.

Also it counts to record. Why do players care about the regular season? They get paid to, it’s their job, and they want to win. No player WANTS to lose.

Plus, if it does well, it boosts ratings, which boosts profits, which boosts salaries in the future.

More money in the future or it mattering for the playoffs or the tournament itself getting prestige would make more people care about it.

TLDR: Desire to win + Money is cool

“The incentive is always nice. No matter how much money you have. $500,000 is nice, especially for young guys who are on their rookie contract. We all have a collective goal to win, not really for the money, it’s just competing.”

    The nugget guy says.

I think you’d find a lot of these guys are cheaper than you’d expect. Lebron would love another 500k given his spending habits.

Say you were making 40k a year, and your work was having an incentive contest to $600 on your next paycheck. Would you not try to win this $500 ?

They care because they have had it explained to them. The sole reason for the tournament is to increase revenue during the early season. An increase in revenue will result in raising the salary cap and player salaries. The commercials, the interviews and statements, are all advertising to increase viewership and revenue.

Idc how rich I was if I could get 500k for doing my job I would lol

But you also gotta think these rookies that aren’t getting millions would love the 500k. I doubt the top guys on a team aren’t gonna try when they know they are helping out the rookies or guys who don’t get paid like them.

Only thing I don’t like is the courts, they seem like an injury hazard to me.

Ah yes another post saying somehow people will care LESS when there’s money on the line

I don’t know how much more it necessarily incentivizes players, but they’re certainly not going to care less when they can earn more for doing the same thing

It’s still a lot of money. It would be enough to donate to a school, help build a park, buy new cars for family… etc
