Two all time great regular season players known for their playoff shortcomings. Current achievements

Harden: 1x MVP, 10x All Star, 7x All NBA, 3x scoring champ, 2x assist leader

Embiid: 1x MVP, 6x All Star, 5x All NBA, 2x scoring champ, 3x All Defense

Embiid this season is on his way to winning his 3rd scoring title and matching Harden in that department. If he stays healthy he should surpass Harden in all star and all nba selections as well. I think he will be the higher one all time when it’s all said and done even without a ring

Harden, playoff success is the same but you can’t tell me Harden wasn’t a top 3 player from 2014 until covid

Harden’s legacy is gonna be a lot worse than most of /r/NBA thinks if he never manages to win a chip.

Even while he was in his prime analysts and media people didn’t want to put him on their award ballots. If he retires without winning anything it will just be vindication for those guys that he wasn’t a winning player.

Embiid would need to keep up this level of play for another 3-4 years and make some deep playoff runs.

I think he can get there but we’ll see.

    Harden’s MVP finishes:

    • 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 13

    Embiid’s MVP finishes:

    • 1, 2, 2, 7, 12

It’s going to take a strong 3-4 years for Embiid to get to Harden’s level. Obviously that’s achievable but it’s not a surefire thing, Embiid turns 30 in a few months.

Also OP just lumped the All-NBA selections together but Harden has six First Team selections. Embiid has one.

Not saying OP did it deliberately, I know it’s often done that way for simplicity, but still.

Embiid can easily win another MVP in his career. He’s playing his best basketball ever and I feel like thsts sometjing I’ve been saying every year

He is always hurt/gassed when the playoffs come around. Hopefully they can lock up some form of homecourt early so Nurse does not play him extended minutes, which is a Nick Nurse special.

People here are showing the exact problem with this sub

Debating semantics like all nba teams votes

Harden led his teams to better records, better playoff finishes, almost beat the greatest team of all time in the playoffs and arguably had another mvp or two stolen from him.

Embiid doesn’t compare right now. He could by winning another mvp or having a great (and better than harden) playoff run

This idea that Harden deserved 3 or 4 MVPs has somehow become popular on this sub and is insane box score watching lol

You’d think that the top 3 peaks are MJ, LeBron, and Harden by the way people talk about it

Idk tbh, Harden had a solid argument all of the yesrs he came 2nd. Id give Steph 2015, but the reasoning for 2017 worked against Harden but when hes in the isame position was Westbrook in 2019 dragging a medicore roster while putting up even more absurd numbers than Westbrook did, he comes 2nd. I dont think he shouldve recieved 3 or 4 MVPs but I think.he was robbed one of the MVPs from in 2017 and 2019.

I think it will be close when its all set and done

They both have 1 MVP. Harden has 3 scoring titles, Embiid has 2 and its very likely he gets another one this season. Harden is a 10x Allstar and 7x AllNBA, Embiid is a 6x Allstar(soon to be 7), 5x AllNBA(soon to be 6), but also 3x AllNBA defense.

If Embiid has 2-3 more strong seasons which I think it will easily happen barring disaster, they’ll be pretty much tied in awards. Harden will still have more 1st team AllNBA, Embiid more All defense

Anyway, a ring would change everything for any of the two.

Harden. Stop this. It’s Harden. It’s not even close. Joel wouldn’t have an MVP is Jokic didn’t decide to rest up for the playoffs in the last 10 games or so last year. That’s the only reason he even beat Joker for that MVP. That MVP to me is just like Mike Conley’s All Star selection…

I think what most obviously hurts Embiid’s “all time” standing is the volume of games he’s played, and volume of great games he’s played. He’s 4 months away from turning 30, but has only played 410 (equivalent to 5 full 82 game seasons) of a possible 736 regular season games up to his 10th season in the league, and is a notable playoff under-performer (compared to his regular season output, whether due to injuries, teammates, or other factors).
