I think it’s more that people hate people of other beliefs that live near to them. And when politics gets mixed with religion and then there’s some violence, that’s when it becomes a real feud.

This is what I’ve been trying to convince my dad. He’s Mormon and the modern Evangelical movement behind this fucjed up government couldn’t hate Mormons more. I think because they are so similar they actually end up hating them more than people like atheists, but they are willing to work together to get rid of the other hated people before they turn on each other

Yep, as someone raised without religion they pretty all look like the same stupid shit. The differences in practice have a lot more to do with the culture of the area than the text of their books.
As a former Mormon you are wrong but arguing about what some Christians believe and others don’t is like the stupidest and most pointless type of conversation ever. My point was that they despise each other and you’re kind of proving it

TBF, the structural differences if the protestant faith and the catholic faith were viable at the start. The catholics had a reformation and because they actually looked at the protestant doctrines and were like “yeah, ya’know, fair” to a lot of them. Meanwhile, Protestantism got popular with the the elites because they misinterpreted Martin Luther’s philosophy to basically say that just paying lip service to God can still get you into heaven and so they could save a bundle on tithes and treat faith a performance art. Which is how you got assholes like the Calvinists.
In case you were thinking I was feeding into the thesis of the thread, neither of them are wholly correct, which is true of most religions, but if you look at the them purely objectively, Catholicism is “more correct” than Protestantism, as Catholics at least expect their practitioners to perform “good works” in their communities as a requirement rather than a strong suggestion.

Eh, I think protestantism and catholicism are actually pretty different. Even the local catholic churches can differ quite a lot between countries - e.g. Germany’s catholic churches are generally a lot more progressive than those in Africa. And European lutheranism might as well be on a different planet compared to US evangelicalism.
And to many people the differences between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are negligible.

There are very foundational differences between them.
I say this as an irreligjous person who’s studied world religions.
They only appear similar when viewed through a very low resolution/highly abstracted perspective.
As far as I’m concerned, Religions are categorized first by who their god is so I’d lump these and more together.

I think that the ridiculousness (ridiculosity?) of other’s religions reflects the believer’s own religion’s absurdity, made especially worse, in my opinion, if it’s only recognized on a subconscious level.
Like in the movie Fight Club when the narrator says he can’t cry with another faker around.
Competition for membership and money. People changing from say christianity to islam or to buddhism is less likely, they’re outsiders and foreign, but not direct competitors. Making your version of Christianity more cult-ish by fomenting hatred of the similar competition to prevent people from leaving or losing church benefactors does the same thing.
