I wanted a 2000s/ASCII-era vibe sign to put up when I have extra bread to give away, and my wife came through in spades

I like it a lot, gonna tile it onto four pages and call it a day

Edit: I completed it with a small handwritten note at the bottom:

    Does your wife take requests?

A loaf of sourdough with cheddar and jalapeno please.

I already have a bake at work, but I will gladly be fat for bread. If bread was good enough for our ancestors, its good enough for me damnt!

To be fair, I included that in my guidance to influence the overall vibe, not be chronologically precise

Also, I’ve always known stuff like this ¯_(ツ)_/¯ as ASCII characters and the more complicated pictures as ASCII art. So they were two separate, but related topics that I hoped she would synthesize

      And boy did she

        ¯\_(ツ)_/¯*

Also, this specific example isn’t ASCII art, it’s some other encoding which I forgot the name of, Japanese characters, variable width (in bytes). Common for it to be drawn using Arial or a metric compatible font rather than any monospace.

Note that “ASCII” art also refers to 8-bit extensions of the encoding, where “oldskool ASCII art” means strictly the actual 7-bit set. Not to be confused with ANSI art, which is the same as ASCII but with ANSI control characters, like for changing color.

“text art” is what I usually call everything combined, including art on the Commodore systems, only very recently made possible with Unicode officially. Anyways, I don’t really see any of it on the image…

Exactly, the only limiting factors are the size of my oven, refrigerator, and how often my wife will tolerate the house being hot as balls

Think how awkward the room would be if you got a gift at a party and in front of everyone, holding up your new loaf of bread, you say, “it’s better than AI slop!!”

People would just look at you… confused about the connection. Yes, breAd has an ‘A’ in it.

The post isn’t about the bread though, it’s about the sign, made with love by a real person. Rarer and rarer these days

Yes and the proper response is “nice sign” not “let me ignore your effort and remind everyone that AI permeates everything including a topic trying very hard to avoid AI”

I’m saying some people are so obsessed with AI that they have literally absorbed it into their personalities, and that is as annoying or worse than just scrolling past slop like advertisements.

“ignore your effort”? It’s the opposite, it’s praise for putting in the effort when that’s more optional than ever, that’s the whole thing.

No, if it was praise for the effort it would be literally praising the effort.

If a child walks up to you with a finger painting and says, “look at what I painted,” your don’t say “it’s better that AI slop”

You’re a monster who has been poisoned by AI to be the thing you hate, constantly thinking about AI slop.

The context is very salient because so many people think that asking AI to make a sign is better than doing something handmade.

The comment saying, hey everybody, look at this, this is better than those AI posters, is designed to counteract this notion.

Yes. I love your sign. The wavy text brings particular joy to me as I have many good memories of making ridiculous text effects.

Hah. Well, suggesting mental illness for my comments in this thread does have the waft of “not civil” which is rule 5.

                  Civility online is very subjective.

You’re missing the point. The original comment was about the sign, not the bread.

You’re just seeing one comment out of a person’s day, how do you know someone pointing that out spends even five minutes a day thinking about AI? And anyway, many people come to social media and especially the fediverse with the intention of discussion the primary issues of our time, one of them being AI, and a style using wordart like this image probably became a highly upvoted post at least in part because of people being sick of AI flyers.

People “obsessed with AI” usually are concerned with the greater issues related to it, like the fascist tech-corpos taking over our government and economic systems, which is a hard thing to not agitate against when you are aware of what’s going on.
