I used to have really bad insomnia, but through lower caffeine, extra exercise, and a consistent sleep schedule I’ve mostly beaten it.

But today I’m sick, which almost always means being up the entire night. Not a great combo.

When all of my usual tricks fail I usually just embrace it. Get up, watch TV, play a game, or read. No reason to be bored AND miserable.

Curious how other people handle it.

I think the science says it’s important to associate the bedroom with sleep. That means that if you can’t sleep while in bed, it’s better to get up and see if you can do some stuff to make you more tired. I would advise against anything with a screen though.

Extreme example from my therapist: get up and do something you hate. Clean the grout in your bathroom with a toothbrush. After 15 minutes, go back to bed.

I actually love that idea. It will help associate _and _ you’re doing something productive? Talk about win-win

Break every good sleep habit I have. Does it help? No. Does it feel good to do so? Also no. Will I stop? Not likely

If marijuana or masturbation aren’t cutting it, rewatch some familiar TV - TNG, X-Files, Batman TAS. The familiarity usually puts me out, sometimes I’ll watch six episodes and get an hour sleep.

I just lay still with my eyes closed and wait. That’s how 100% of the times I’ve fallen asleep have begun so I trust it to work this time as well.

I saw a hack, years ago, probably on reddit since I was there at the time (so, long ago) that was like thinking “since I’m awake, let me just get up and do some chores”, like washing yesterday’s dishes you left in the sink to soak. Apparently at the prospect, you then sleep like a baby It’s a similar brain glitch to like once the alarm goes off and you hit snooze, I fall asleep in seconds. Stupid brains…

My stupid brain glitch is where I can’t sleep, I’ll get up after midnight and go watch YouTube for an hour or so, go back to bed and roll around for another hour then watch some tv and crawl back in after 4am. Then toss and turn for another 2 hours, see it’s 625 and tell myself that of I’m still awake at 645 I’ll just get up and start work early. Then my alarm goes off and I spent the whole day feeling like shit.

Move to the couch or sleep the opposite way (head where feet usually go). If that doesn’t work I start organizing files on my pc. Brain will relent because it loathes file organizing

Heard this trick on the radio a few months ago and it seems to work for me.

Think of a word, I usually do something short like “cat” or “dog”. Let’s use “dog” for this example.

Take the first letter and list every single word you can think of that starts with the same letter. So, for “dog”, think of all words that start with the letter “d”

Once you run out of “d” words or are taking more than a few seconds between each one, go to the next letter and do the same thing. So, all words that start with “o”. Continue until you’re asleep or have to pick a new word.

Diphenhydramine, 4 bux and takes about 40 minutes to kick in. If that doesn’t work I’m calling in sick if I’m working. It’s an uncommon issue for me though which is good because you can’t use this drug regularly.
