Basically the title. Replace Murray with Trae. Contracts stay the same. Are the Nuggets better or worse now? I’m talking about Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks by the way

I’d say worse because Murray is better fit with Jokic and it’s not like he is much worse than Trae anyway

Trae is much better. Trae with MPJ, AG and Jokic around him would be much more efficient and would play the non Jokic minutes way better than Murray. Murray is a top 25 guy, Trae is a top 15-17 guy

Trae can’t stop a varsity pg, he doesn’t fit in as a cutter cuz dude doesn’t finish in among trees well and he just all around plays in that heliocentric style that doesn’t produce winning when it counts

chemistry from playing so many years together. Also Murray has a very extensive set of moves all over the floor. So he can create shots from wherever he is.

Also, Traes whole game of ‘is it a floater or a lob’…wouldnt exist with Jokic.

Your one of few who mentioned chemistry. To me this is the biggest reason of all. The 2 of them might have the best chemistry in the league. Then you add the chemistry Gordon has developed with both of them to me Murray is untouchable for the Nuggets.

Murray also doesn’t have the ego like Trae. He doesn’t always need the ball, doesn’t complain, puts in the work. He’s only had one head coach whereas Trae has likely been responsible for the firing of a couple coaches in Atlanta. For fit I would take Murray over Trae on the Nuggets.

You’re assuming a lot about Trae, who’s a #1 and been that since day 1 while Murray is a #2. If he was in Traes situation in Atlanta his whole career I don’t think he would do anything compared to what Trae has

My comment is no disrespect to Trae although I’m not particularly a fan of his style of game. I think most people if they were looking to start a team would take Trae over Jamal but the question was about swapping Trae for Jamal on the current Denver roster and in that scenario where you already have a bonafide MVP (Jokic) I’d take Jamal. Every day.

It’s the same thing. People are assuming a guy who’s clearly the better player wouldn’t adjust his game to play with the best player in the world. People forget Jamal was completely inconsistent in that role and had the most consistent stretch of how career in that role this year in the playoffs. Trae has never had a shooter like MPJ on his team while simultaneously having the best player in the world to take all the pressure off him.

When Trae plays the goal of the other team is to shut Trae down because if you do that you shut the hawks down. If Trae is just free to roam around because you have to double jokic, MPJ and KCP with out there next to Trae, and having AG as a cutter/lob threat he would look completely different.

Have you watched the nuggets? It sometimes feels like they can read each other’s minds

What makes you think Trae could be “conditioned to play” like Murray?

he did a job at points during the playoffs, and it was largely thanks to his matchip comparative size/physicality. there are levels to bad defense, and jamal murray vs trae young is probably the perfect example of that

He’s not a shutdown defender, but he’s long and strong as hell. He may not be locking up, but you aren’t getting easy buckets on his head.

It’s still better than Trae. There are a lot of really bad defenders who are still better than Trae.

Not at all true. But I don’t expect a 76ers fan to actually be able to identify real defense.

Not nearly as good at diving to the basket, and Jokic finding cutters is a big part of Denver’s gameplan
