In a post from a few days ago, I noticed that someone mentioned that they were afraid to post about their dislike of the Tudor BB58 for fear of downvoting. You know what? The BB is a boring watch that’s not worth the money, and Tudor wouldn’t be half as popular as it is without the connection to Rolex. If Rolexes were as attainable as they were in past years, cut that by a factor of 10. Would you really buy a BB if the reality were that you could just save a little bit more and get a Rolex Submariner? That’s my hot take. What’s yours?

Agree and disagree. I think it’s admirable that Panerai has kept to it’s iconic design. But I think they could have done that while releasing additional lines and options.

Keep the original Panerai line as it is as the main line, and release a additional line for GADA sports watch, chronograph, dress watch, and etc. They don’t need to do all of that, but they should at least have more than one look to the brand in general. Right now Panerai is a very stuck one trick pony.(though admittedly it’s a cool trick)

There’s no such thing as “value for money” in the luxury watch space. All luxury watches are overpriced - that is the whole point of “luxury” - duh. Speaking along the same lines, I saw a reviewer try to justify the price difference between two dive watches because one was METAS certified whilst the other was only COSC certified - literally for 99.999% of people this won’t make a difference. Most of these luxury watch goobers take their watches off to wash their hands.

Mmm plenty of people work near large magnets and the metas cert guarantees protection from 15000 gauss, or an MRI. And the fact that each cased up watch gets in water resistance tested is a plus.

I mean… sure but if that’s your use case due to work then you’re probably better served by a digital Casio than a luxury dive watch. I could time my lifts at the gym with the bezel on my SMP but I still use an Apple Watch for that because it’s a better fit for the job.

Just because most people won’t know the difference doesn’t mean that there isn’t a justification in the price difference. You could say that about laymen in anything. METAS certification has more testing and I’m assuming it costs more.

Exactly, and for the 0.0001% of people for whom it actually does matter, they’d be better off getting a G shock or something because it’ll be more durable, keep better time, more readable in the dark, longer lasting battery, etc. No point in talking about practicality for something that’s inherently impractical.

I think you’re conflating “relative value” with “absolute value.” Sure, a $5k mechanical watch can’t compete with a cheap quartz if the metric is timekeeping. But if you’re comparing multiple different luxury watches for finishing, accuracy, and other specs, there’s bound to be models that are offering more features for less money.

This is so wrong. When I’m at my weekend home in the Mariana Trench (seasonal, of course) I frequently rely on my watch. How else would I gauge the depths, time, and pressure? With much more modern, precise, computerized equipment in the submersible? Pshaw.

For real. Certification flies out the window once your new watch gets banged around, even slightly.

Smaller watches look good on men and the idea that a watch needs to be the right size is ridiculous. When people ask “is this watch to small?” my answer will always be no. 36mm and 34mm watches look great too, especially dressier options.

I was a hater, and I even didn’t like in the store on wrist at first. BUT I gave it a second chance on wrist months later, and it kind of won me over. I still had my reservation, but I decided to give it try with plans to sell it once honeymoon period was over. A year and half later, I hate that I love it and it’s part of my permanent collection now.

I think the big hurdle was to see past the integrated watch hype and the idea that PRX is a budget option for that category. Once I started seeing the watch as its own thing without the hype baggage I started to like it much more. It’s an automatic sports watch that wears thinner than it should, catches light beautifully, and has the specs to handle daily wear.

Same. For some reason, I always found the metal door jamb (around the magnetic lock) at ATM booths with my watch.

Oh Hardlex, I hardly knew ya.

I guess now its just an indicator of quality for me if they use sapphire - as it isn’t expensive. It’s just not cheap like mineral.

Bought a great looking Dufa meca-quartz, but returned it as soon as I discovered the domed crystal wasn’t sapphire. That’s just begging for trouble.

And those old dive watches from the 60’s? Only rated for 5atm. So, on a normal day, went I’m not on call for Seal Team 6, I think I’m be fine with any watch that is 5atm.

In fact there is huge controversy about needing anything more and swimming with one is absolutely fine.

I love dive watches, but it is quickly becoming apparent that they serve little purpose now.

Other controversial opinion: Watches are too damn thick and big. It’s like the trend with car emblems. Refinement is why I got into this game.

Miniature seconds wheel looks tacky to me. I know Nomos gets a lot of love, but personally I am not a fan at all. Having a sweeping or ticking seconds hand it quintessential watch aesthetic to me. It’s the visual heartbeat of the watch. I love dial complications like date, moon phase, day, etc, but they should be visually secondary to the main watch face. By having the a small seconds hand being the only active thing on the watch face, it distracts from the rest of the watch. A full seconds hand draws the eye over the whole watch instead.

Every passing day I respect Jody/Just One More Watch less because of how much bootlicking he does for the Aliexpress brands. I don’t necessarily hate brands like San Martin and Pagani Design on their own, but how much he insinuates that you’d be better off with Ali brands’ (admittedly very well made and affordable) copies over the genuine article doesn’t sit right with me for some reason. While Jody is right from a completely logical and financial perspective, I don’t think he realizes that collecting watches is kinda illogical in of itself. People who can afford them WANT expensive watches because it makes them feel special and cool, and getting something that merely apes the look of a desirable watch when they could afford the real thing simply doesn’t do it for a lot of people.

For example, he straight up says in his most recent 11/11 video that you’d be better off with an Aliexpress copy of a Doxa than an actual Sub 300 because he couldn’t discern how the real thing would be any better. Given Doxa’s reputation for making capable, well-crafted diver’s watches that were able to stand up to the rigors of military operations, I sincerely doubt this. I also find it very hard to believe his claim that San Martin will become a legitimate threat to other affordable brands’ sales, especially when 1. San Martin’s sales are practically dwarfed by how many mall watches Seiko and Citizen sell, and 2. Their whole shtick and success is inherently contingent on either copying other people’s homework, or otherwise producing original designs that range from generic to gaudy.

I respect Jody and like his content, and I don’t mind his and many other people’s affection for the Ali brands, but I have a hard time believing that some tried and true watch brands are shitting their panties because some niche hobbyists are buying homages of their watches.

That’s a good hot take, but one I completely disagree with.

Most “watch YouTubers” completely ignore the existence of Chinese brands, even when they produce original designs. Jody, and a few others that are doing the same thing, shine a light on an area that is totally ignored and unknown by the broader market. He provides product reviews for watches that you can’t see in person and are the most attainable for people. Most people can’t afford or don’t want to pay more than an AliExpress price for a watch, especially if you think globally. Jody is providing a valuable service.

Also, Doxa is basically a fake Swiss company that makes Chinese watches. The AliExpress versions are pretty much the same thing. Doxa just owns the IP for the designs and brand, which they bought after the original company went belly up. It doesn’t have anything to do with the original Doxa. There are many companies like it.

Just a couple of quick things (not downvoting or trying to start anything).

      • Jody’s channel focuses on watches that are $500 or under (even he’s said this before). Does he occasionally show or review watches that are more than $500? Yes. Does he own watches more than $500? Yes. But, the vast majority of affordable watches that’ll allow him to continue making enough videos to be a professional YouTuber are going to be Chinese… and they are very easily available on AliExpress.
      • Second point and maybe a hit take, his first watch from his own watch brand is horrible IMHO. He feels divers are the end all, be all of versatile watches. They simply aren’t (again, IMHO). I honestly think a GADA watch would have been a better idea for his first watch.

It is true that most of Jody’s reviews are on sub-$500 watches, which is exactly where the Aliexpress brands reign supreme. My issue with Jody is not merely him reviewing them; it’s more a conflict of interest. Coming from a journalism background, I find it interesting that Jody is an Aliexpress affiliate that explicitly makes money off people buying watches via the links in his videos’ descriptions, while simultaneously showering praise upon the Aliexpress brands. While I’ve heard mostly good things about the popular Ali brands, I feel like Jody’s reviews in particular are indicative of him drinking the Kool Aid. It makes sense for him to be as positive as possible about Aliexpress watches in particular, because the more viewers he convinces to buy San Martins, the bigger the commission he gets. While Jody’s reviews are usually nuanced and well-considered, I can’t help but put two and two together when he says he’s an Aliexpress affiliate and that a Seestern is objectively better than a Doxa in the same video.

The Omega Seamaster looks like when Homer Simpson designs the car. Way too much going on.

“It has wavy lines on the face. Oooh and big sword hands. And a massive ugly helium valve.”
