If the US ever regains its sanity there will literally need to be an entirely new government Office of Detrumpification, fully staffed with expert teams tasked to review and reverse all the wrong he’s done, and that’s only to struggle back to the status quo.

So let me get this straight. Gas costs alot, so we make cars burn more gas for less mileage. And this is good for the consumer? It’s obviously great for big oil.
Well yeah that is how capitalism and amerikkkan’s constant refusal to end his life and solve the problem (for the short term). But the reality is, USA got too bitchy and now the world is closing the doors on the USA. I hope you’re not inside the borders when the door closes.
This isn’t likely to change anything in the market. Auto manufacturers have invested shitloads into meeting those standards and they’re not going to retroactively change their already-designed powerplants over rules that will probably change again in 6 months.
Also it won’t matter anyway since automakers realized they can just upsell everyone into “luxury” light trucks in the US and fuel economy standards don’t matter to those anyway.
You would think that. But here in the city of Springfield Illinois. Our power is coal. And trump reduced regulations.
And guess what. They just stopped doing the extra filter/cleaning/scrubbing (whatever it’s called ) because they don’t have to. Even though the infrastructure for it all is already installed.

It still is cheaper to not do it. So they won’t. Even though it’s already all set up.
Also, even if it was guaranteed there would be no fuel economy standards ever again, manufacturers understand that many consumers want better fuel economy, because people don’t like paying for gas. Getting better MPGs than competing models from other brands can be a big selling point for your car.
Also, this makes any company that caves to this less competitive in every other country.
Also I doubt consumers with increasing gas prices are going to be happy with less efficient cars.

Damn straight! If my car or truck ain’t big, loud, inefficient, polluting and running exclusively on completely nonrenewable, expensive to refine, 100 million year old fossil goo, I ain’t interested! Who cares if only less than 25% of the energy contained in a tank of gas is actually used to move my car, while the other 75%+ is totally wasted as heat. Efficiency is for nerds.
Seriously, though, I really don’t want an expensive EV. I want an affordable EV. We need more of those.
Same, I’d like to not have to pay 50K+ for EV sedan and 100K+ for a giant, extra heavy EV truck that can’t haul shit, then again, I can’t even find a decent ICE small truck in the US that isn’t geared toward pavement princess drivers.
I was looking at the new Slate truck and that at least looks somewhat promising but I’m not exactly holding breath given how these new EV companies operate and wish they’d offer a long bed for lumber.

Yeah, the Slate is interesting. The fact that it doesn’t have a massive infotainment screen is itself enough to keep me intrigued. I’m not an early adopter, though. I’m going to see how their first model run goes, at least.
After being a model 3 early adopter, I concur about not doing that again. I’ll be waiting at least two to three years from the first delivery before I look to buy it.
New vehicle from a new company -hard pass. Even legacy makers can’t seem to make a reliable new model.
I too feel similarly, but electric engines aren’t exactly new tech. Idk what battery composition they’re using but that’s probably the only iffy part to me if they are innovating anything there
If the base model is truly simple, it’s probably gonna be an alright product

Beyond global warming, there is smog/pollution problems with it.
More importantly, it is directly increasing oil use which directly increases gasoline prices compared to any lesser use. So more evidence that higher oil, gasoline, diesel prices now are intended by design.
The people who want this are either fossil fuel cultists or cannot afford vehicles that would be affected.
They are people who follow politics like a religion.
I’m sure there will be a lot of demand for lower MPG after this year.
