[an orange character is speaking, smugly]
I vote far right because I hate immigrants who come to our country and do not adopt its culture

[from their brain, a thought bubble emerges which shows a sunny thai landscape, in which orange is chilling on a deck chair by the sea, drinking coconut juice and smiling, clearly enjoying life]
I dream of having enough money to move/retire to Thailand and never learn the language or adopt the culture

Last year we visited Portugal and one of our friends there takes care of holiday homes. He said that Portugal aparently is a trending locaction for US-Americans right now and everyone in their business fucking hate the US-American tourists because they treat them like they are some kind of sub-human. And also because they are fucking stupid and incapable of doing simple things.

I mean, if you visit a different country, at least have a bit of respect.

That reminds me of the (apparently real) complaint by a British couple vacationing in Spain, who were outraged that nobody had told them so many people would be speaking Spanish. 😀

Seen one old lady on TV saying she moved to Spain because the UK was overrun with foreigners.

      Was not a comedy.

Presumably the argument is “if I’m not going to understand what anyone is saying, can I at least be somewhere with less rain please?”

      I believe it.

I worked with an Englishman who has lived in the Netherlands for more than 20 years without learning Dutch.

We had a work trip to Madrid, and he went the weekend beforehand for a short vacation. I ran into him on Sunday night and asked him how it went. He said it was terrible, because he’s a vegetarian and couldn’t eat anything because nobody spoke English. He didn’t know what to order or how to ask if something was vegetarian. He was outraged that nobody spoke English. In Madrid. The capital of Spain. 🙈

Plenty of people speak English in Madrid. They were probably fucking with him because he’s British and was likely rude like the typical British tourist. If he just asked “Habla usted ingles?” Plenty of people would accommodate, especially hospitality staff.

I am never sure since I am American so know lots of Spanish from osmosis. But of course in any large European city there will be plenty of people who know enough English to help out. So yeah, he probably approached every interaction with stereotypical British arrogance and annoyed the people who would have been happy to help him otherwise. 🙈

On behalf of the rest of the country that has more brain cells than a used tea bag, we’d like to issue an apology to Madrid, the Netherlands, and yourself for his ignorance.

There’s some of us here who are trying their best to educate these people but it feels like trying to hold water in a sieve.

OMG the ones that voted for Brexit despite having a retirement home in the EU and then got kicked out for not paying taxes were hilarious!

“What do you mean we need a visa? THIS IS NOT THE BREXIT I VOTED FOR!!!”

To be fair, absolutely noone knew what type of Brexit was being voted on. That minor detail was left out of any of the conversation.

It’s not even that deep. “I’m voting right because I hate immigrants”. And by “immigrant” they mean “not white”.

They don’t like integration, they like America. In their eyes immigrants will never be American regardless of how they act, they just think the American way of life is the only acceptable way of life, regardless of location.

You hate immigrants because you’re far right

I hate my government for letting in over a 100k immigrants a year, while we have a housing shortage of 400k.

    We are not the same.

Housing is intentionally kept sparse to keep prices high, as it benefits both developers and the government. Not people, though.

      Immigrants don’t change that math.

Do local authories (part of the government) raise funds through taxation?

Do central governments not make money through home sale transactions?

It benefits corrupt politicians, not the government itself. That’s why China has an abundance of empty housing - local authorities made bank through sales.

It is the irony of wanting everyone coming to your country to adapt to your culture, but having the dream to move to an other country and not adapt themselves at all.

It’s not implying any causality, it’s just denouncing hypocrisy.

There is no hypocrisy in dreaming to move to some other country as long as you’re not trying to stop others from achieving that same dream.

I don’t think it’s a valid fallacy since there would be a whole different set of issues if to many millionaire immigrants came to America and not learn the “culture”.
