Yep. I’m prepared to fight like hell in the primary, if we get one, to make sure he doesn’t make it on the ballot. If we don’t topple establishment leadership at the DNC this election though, they will force Newsom through regardless of what the primary shows, like with Bernie. The bigger fight is now.

Ken Martin, they promoted him from running Minnesota’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor party, which is our local Democratic party and generally is a bit left of the national party. I don’t know how progressive Martin himself is versus how much just kinda happened under him because of the party itself - Governor Tim Walz signed off on a lot of progressive stuff because he briefly oversaw a DFL trifecta and he and his party were willing to spend political capital to make good things happen but I wouldn’t consider Walz to be super progressive on his own.

Ken Martin is cause for a bit of optimism, he’s more progressive, but he may just be an amorphous blob of whatever machine he’s in front of.

Possibly-amorphous-blob is still better than an establishment centrist who will screw over progressives like they did to Bernie.

There’s a lot of leftward momentum right now, and as long as that isn’t actively hindered from the top, then I think we have reason to hope.

And we lost to Trump. A campaign needs to be more than “I’m not Trump”. Same shit almost lost Brazil to the fascists. “I’m not Trump” is good enough for informed voters, but that’s not enough. You have to reach the uninformed and misinformed too.

Newsom, in his veto letter to the legislature, said he was supportive of “protecting sensitive personal information of Californians,” but that a “categorical ban on sharing that information goes a step too far.”

The governor pointed to existing state laws that require businesses to give consumers the option to limit sharing their information and budget constraints that would hinder implementing and enforcing the law.

Newsom also signed a handful of other bills strengthening the state’s privacy rules:

    • SB 923 expands the scope of the California Consumer Privacy Act to require businesses to delete all personal information they have on a consumer upon request, not just data collected directly from the consumer. Online-only businesses will be required to provide a webform or portal for deletion requests.
    • AB 883 shortens the time with which data brokers must comply with a data deletion request from 45 to 30 days. It requires elected officials and judges receive information on how to access the deletion mechanism, known as DROP, to protect their information.

Other data privacy laws still awaiting Newsom’s signature or veto include:

    • SB 690 would remove the private right to action for alleged violations under a wiretapping law, allowing just the state attorney general to pursue such legal challenges.
    • AB 2561 would prohibit an operating system or application from re-adjusting a user’s privacy setting without consent.

This isn’t necessary. All you need is to protect people from fraud.

If Amazon tells you that it will sell your data you are completely free to just not use Amazon. If enough people choose not to use Amazon, Amazon will wonder why. If they do any semblance of at all good investigating they will find out it’s because those prior customers were against having their data sold and they will stop selling data.

The government only needs to come in to make sure Amazon is actually telling you it will sell your data, because not doing so is fraud, and the government should protect the innocent against fraud.

As an adult, I don’t need big daddy government telling businesses what they can sell. I only need to understand the situation I’m being presented in its entirety so that I can make my own decisions. It’s my consent, not the government’s.

Some days my PTSD is bad and my brain just feels… Slow. Like I’m stuck in molasses up there. Work feels harder. Things take longer to click. Honestly, when I feel like that, sometimes I feel a bit of imposter syndrome; a lot of things in my life rely on my intelligence, and I feel like I just don’t belong. I’m so grateful to people like you reminding me, though, that even through brain damage, I’m still not the stupidest person in the room ❤

I agree that Newsom is a billionaire-class anti-progress piece of shit, but this seems like a “cross the bridge when we come to it” situation. Progressives have a lot of momentum right now and there’s a good chance the nominee in 2028 will be one.

Attention is power in politics. Hating him gives him power. It’s okay to critique and inform, but don’t let it consume you. That’s how trump got traction. If all we can offer to the political conversation is who sucks, then we’re going to wind up with somebody who sucks.

Focus on someone better. Who do you want to win the primary? Start extolling their virtues, spread the word. Who is an ideal candidate?

Yes, but if republicans win they’re gonna start rounding us up. The Dems can be influenced. Reps just want us all dead. One is better than the other. Not voting doesn’t send a message, it’s just surrendering to fascists.

Tell that to the trans people who wanted an ally in the UK labor party. That’s what Newsom, the New York Times, and all these other terfs want for us. It’s not a good card to play, but if we aren’t willing to make good on a threat, we have no power.

Ok but the alternative is literally just let the republicans win. Do you have a viable alternative that isn’t reforming the dem party via primaries and running progressives? Because to my knowledge that’s the only way forward that doesn’t involve system collapse which likely kills all the trans people first.

The strategy is keeping terfs from winning the primaries; not voting for them in the general as a real threat is part of that. Besides, corprocrats winning is what will kill the system more than anything. If they prevent reform like the ruling class intends, we will keep getting fascists and they will keep getting worse. If you think Trump is bad, think about what Jewish conspiracy Nazis raised on Nick Fuentes will bring. Without a genuine progressive in the next election cycle, then the Nazis are guaranteed to win in 2032 and do more than if the Trumpians win in 2028.

Ok that’s all well and good far as theory goes but practically speaking that’s not particularly useful and, again, more or less defaults to the republicans winning which is unambiguously worse materially and practically speaking. We hold the democratic party accountable by primarying incumbents with progressives and preventing republican obstructionism. Any other option accelerates the fascism with the vague hope that it’ll somehow foment a global socialist revolution. It’s not really feasible. In fifteen years the fundamentalist ideologists completely overthrew the republican party and yet you all keep arguing we can’t do the same with the dems. We could, if all of us voted in every election. It’s not too late or they wouldn’t be trying to prevent us from voting. Like I more or less agree with you philosophically but you’ve all already given up on change within the system, and that leaves the only option being total destruction of the system. Most of us die before that ever happens. Letting the worst option win is never the right call.

Without a genuine progressive in the next election cycle, then the Nazis are guaranteed to win in 2032 and do more than if the Trumpians win in 2028.

That’s silly, if they win in 28 there won’t be voting in 32. This is our last chance to avoid full fascist collapse. Republicans can never again hold enough power to obstruct a progressive agenda or the country will collapse and the only option for trans people will be to get out. There isn’t going to be a global socialist revolution. The fascists have autonomous murder drones and we all are constantly surveilled. It’ll mostly just get us all killed.
