Listen, it’s a really convenient date for four. Like, I highly recommend a board game bar for everyone who’s got a four way date coming up.

Yeah most cities in the US have at least one in my experience. They serve food and drinks and have a bunch of board games available to play (for free assuming you’re buying food/drink) as well as a bunch for sale, and you can bring your own

In a way? But also it’s fine. Boardgames are a piece of media so not being a fan of the whole thing hits the same as “not being a fan of books” or “not being a fan of anime”. Like, sure, your choices don’t affect me, but you can see how it makes sense that its usually met with “you just haven’t tried the right one.”

Board games are a little unique as well because sometimes the problem is that you aren’t in the right group to play them which is a whole other thing.

I thought a lot about what you say, and I think that’s what it comes down to, truly. I just have never found the right people, and the many times I’ve tried, is another time of bad behavior. Like even just recalling (I was going to write out a few events, but decided not to) a few times that immediately came to mind, I’m having basically an anxiety or lk panic response.

Like it’s like playing poker for the first time and people just take advantage of you. That isn’t fun. Or the loot gremlin with the weak DM. It’s technically just not the right people and not the platform’s fault, but it’s just every. time. and now I’ve a conditioned response to the subject where I’m used to politely declining and saying something dumb like “boardgames aren’t my thing”. And because this is the “totally anonymous” internet, I can talk about this more honestly without fear of hurting anybody’s feelings since nobody’s asking me to play.

Tldr, I think you’re right and I’m a pariah among pariahs among pariahs.

If you ever feel like trying boardgames again, I suggest aiming for a cooperative boardgame. The players work towards a shared goal.

You can still have the issue of not having the right people. Some take too much of a leadership role on, trying to steer the other players to the most optimal moves on all of their turns. But I find it to be uncommon, or handled easily through communication.

Co-op boardgames have become my preferred style. I’m a bit too competitive and have found co-op to let me enjoy the time with friends more

It’s because we know it isn’t cheating to play within house rules so long as everyone agrees 😉

Tabletop gamers are very social, but still nerds. Typical tabletop game also has a lot of rules that need to be discussed and interpreted before playing, and if you want to regularly play you need 3-6 people who can consistently show up and focus for a number of hours.

Polyamorous people are the sort of people who have a very clear and precise picture of what they feel counts as cheating and what their personal boundaries are, and who before beginning a relationship will sit down and litigate the rules and boundaries of the relationship, revisiting them as needed later on or as people are added to or leave the polycule. The ones who don’t do this tend to not be in poly relationships for long. Additionally, speaking for myself here as an ethically monogamous person, you kinda need to have the spoons to deal with lots of people having big feelings around you (good/bad doesn’t matter, all intense feelings are intense) which weeds out the introverts.

The venn diagram of these two groups of people isn’t a circle, but the overlap is really huge. Highly social, likely autistic, respects rules, likes learning. And add to that people who are dating are already spending a whole lot of time with each other, which removes one of the difficulties of board games.

having tried board games and such, I can confirm that the straight hetro male nerds did not in fact lead to a poly love heap.

Damn, I guess it’s my turn to feel called out. We’ve got a floor to ceiling shelf that is filled with board games, and we’re looking at getting another.

I did poly for a long time and wasn’t that into board games. But yeah a lot of poly people are into them.

I’m more into tabletop RPGs, but never achieved the dream of a polycule party.

Nowadays I wouldn’t even recommend crossing the streams that way.

    • I recently had a poly breakup. One of my fears was that it would be the end of the campaign I’ve been dming since the the group was me, a partner and a few of their other partners. Turns out we can all be adults and the game is still on. ☺

Depending on how broad definitions we run by, then board game can be synonymous with tabletop. Especially for the uninitiated

I’ve found that there’s a weird rift where a surprising amount of people who like board games dislike tabletop RPGs. I think because they’re so open, where board games are more structured and directed.

In the biggest polycule I know, there’s a mix of “likes both”, “doesn’t do RPGs but like board games”, and … I don’t know if anyone likes neither in that crew.
