My old professor called and asked me if I was looking for a job because one of the company he was freelancing for wanted him to come over full time. He told me to apply and he’d vouch for me. I got the job.
Very wholesome. Not many such exist.
its nepotism and croniyism, if you had the chance of visiting the indeed forums before it was shutdown. monsters and ziprecruiter is probably the worst ones to use, compared to indeed and glassdoor, because thier listings tends to cater to people who had significant experience from the get-go.

But every single job I have ever had in my career has been through reference from someone I had worked with or for before. Someone I worked with moved on somewhere else and when there was an opening there, they threw my name in.
Where’s walking into the store, demanding to speak to the owner, looking him straight in the eye and giving him a firm handshake while insisting you’ll be the best employee he’s ever hired?
Just kidding, they’ll just look at you weird and tell you to check the F tier platforms.
I would love to see one of those sankey diagrams about job applications except it’s some dude walking into local businesses everyday to do the firm handshake and insist that he would be the greatest employee they will ever have.
And then, because I am a scientist, repeat the experiment with the same dude but dressed like a slob, with a woman, same lady except dressed like a slob, etc
And then do a small paper on the sociology of the interactions and how hiring managers innate biases might impact getting hired.
As someone that’s rode on nepotism jobs my entire adult life, I agree lol. It sure does make the interviewing process easier.
I’ve known a few coworkers throughout the years who have reached out after they left where we worked “hey man it’s better over here.” put in a good word for me and boom.

My first job was “my dad knows a guy” (that guy really fought for me at that company and that turned out great for everyone) and from then on almost every job was through a former coworker. Have returned the favour a few times.
I don’t consider myself a good networker by any means. But that’s literally how I’ve gotten everyone of my jobs during my professional career.
Went to a job fair senior year of college, saw an old classmate, struck up a conversation and that lead to my first job.
Then from there on out, exactly what you described. Just old coworkers recommending better places.
Honestly, the idea of applying for a job going in cold over the Internet sounds like a horrible experience.
It’s not too bad when you’ve got a license that’s in demand but without a license # to put in the box on the app it’s pretty rough. Was pretty rough for the unlicensed roles in my field but is decently easy with. This is reminding me to call back that recruiter in the morning that hubs convinced me to stay in-state because they gave me a follow-up call like a month later to ask if I’m still considering them and idw be too rude in case I do decide to move the year after next.
You may not consider yourself a good networker, but I think you must be. I’ve been working for over 20 years now and never got a single job because of a referral.

It does sound that way, but in my very limited experience it worked out rather well.
Current gig is the only one in my professional career where I didn’t get a foot in the door by word of mouth, and aside from it being scary, it wasn’t really that different. Got me a low 6 figure 100% remote work gig a few years back and I love it. But again, this is a sample size of 1.

For what its worth, i havent talked to my parents in a decade and have moved around but have still landed jobs, its just stressful and time consuming bc most of the job postings are fake
especially if they dont understand the job market(especially if they are boomer or gen-xers, and the family is railing on the child for not finding a job in recent years.
I mean, yes, pretty much, having shitty parents fucking sucks
